You'd be hard pressed to find much better than the 'Red Riding' quartet of books by David Peace.
They're kind of like a British James Ellroy.

He also wrote 'The Damned United', a fictional account of the football manager, Brian Clough, during his short tenure at Leeds United FC (currently in cinemas).
He also wrote 'Tokyo Year Zero' (the first book in a trilogy) and 'GB84' (set around the miner's strike)

GB84 was the one i was thinking about - i really liked the sound of it from the blurb and info on amazon. looks like great stuff.
