I read a few of these as a kid. The first one titled simply 'Berserker' was neat.
Berserkers are robotic, self-replicating machines that wish to destroy all organic life; a kind of doomsday weapon left over from a long forgotten interstellar war. Their initial introduction is as spaceships furnished with machine intelligence. They operate from huge berserker bases where they are capable of building more naughty little fellows like themselves. They are thoroughly nasty - somewhat like the modern Borgs only inhuman altogether and totally into destruction rather than assimilation.
The problem with the series (I never read it all and was astounded to see that there are apparently more real books than fictional berserkers) is that some of the books are really - well - dull. After the initial brilliant premise Saberhagen, bless his soul, just seemed to write about feudal society, vikings and big men fighting each other. So much promise so petered out.
