The business about FC's name came up before. I gather it still puts some people off.
I posted about a previous issue of FC at another forum - I forget the forum's name, but it was a place for authors to meet. I met a weirdly hostile reaction.
They new what Filthy Creations was. They knew Vault. Possibly they knew who I was. Perhaps they were being amusing. One of them commented that he thought filthy creations was what he found in his baby son's diapers. I was about to log out (I'm no match for scintillating wit) when someone commented that I was "running away". I asked "From what?" At that point they disappeared. No FCs were sold.
Obviously more than the magazine's name was an issue there.
But the name didn't help.
I'm embarrassed to admit that I didn't know the origin of the workshop's name until I found Vault. I hadn't read Frankenstein!
How many people have?
Anyway, the business of the name - should it be changed? - has come up again. It must be the third time now. Think about that. The people who suggest the name should be changed obviously have the magazine's best interests at heart.
Opinions wanted and needed.

I've always had some doubts about that name although I am fully aware of the Frankenstein context. But it's truly DREADful. And evokes discussion, as here. Very few other titles do. Vote for keeping it, against my better judgement. But if it is to change, how about CLASHING CYMBALS?

Vote for keeping it, against my better judgement. But if it is to change, how about CLASHING CYMBALS? I'll go along with the majority, Des. I definitely take your point about Filthy Creations being 'truly DREADful' and evoking comment. I also note that Filthy Creations has been said to be a 'self-defeating' title. Personally I have reservations about CLASHING SYMBOLS - puts me in mind of a Salvation Army tract. But like I said, I go with a majority vote. During a previous discussion I suggested 'From the Workshop of Filthy Creation' as a new title. Steve didn't care for it, I remember. Maybe it was also Steve who said I shouldn't worry so much about idiots making rubbish jokes about the name? He always had a lot of sense. Maybe it could be The Last Real Horror Magazine on Earth. Sometimes I get a strong sense of having to work faster to stay in the same place; if I didn't know we already had some great stories for the coming issue (not all of them seen here) - if not for that, I might become despondent. As it is, there are plenty of reasons to be cheerful. Still waiting on your comment!

'Real Horror' in any title will evoke true life horror? How about simply Workshop for DREADful Fiction?

I';m leaning towards one final issue at least of Fc - as a swan song. And then maybe a new title?

I';m leaning towards one final issue at least of Fc - as a swan song. And then maybe a new title? Did you ever see the issues of 1960s-'70s British SF magazine Science Fiction and Fantasy where the title changed to Impulse? The original name was ghosted/abbreviated with the new title printed over it. I always liked that. Been busy tonight actually putting together the first pages of the new issue. As I edited I was enjoying the story, several chapters of it. Some program details are still proving difficult, for instance - surprisingly - centering text! I think I'll need to copy some of the Creepy Girl font family over from the older laptop, too, as not all of that family's members have been found online today. Yesterday and today have also been experimenting with Picassa's movie-making features. Making movies in Picassa is easy. What's difficult is finding the folder you need when Picassa's catalogued the entire computer and external drive and provides no easy navigation to any part of that catalogue. Oh well, nearly time for bed.

Last night, after a frustrating day trying to figure out the Scribus program, I amused myself by coming up with a few alternative magazine titles.
The Green Journal (was there one of those in The White People?)
Whistler's Weekly (after an old radio horror show)
Penny Dreadful
Infamies and Appalling Plots
Torquemada's Bedtime Tales
The Yellow Gazette (a la Beardsley, natch)
Weird Wanderings
Strange Reports
Dreadful Accounts
Grim Scribblings (or The Grim Scribbler)
Atrocity Exhibitions
Defenestrations and Other Changing Points of View
I suppose I'll have to go back and struggle with Scribus again now. Either that or splash out the cash for a full version of PagePlus.
Colin, great to see you here. Be back in a while to read your story. Abject apologies for the nonce.

I do like the expression Penny Dreadful, although Penelope might not. Strange Reports sounds a little flatulent. How about something with the word Unease in the title?

Just to give us a bit of snobbery I made a rough translation of the latin for things- (some of it doesn't translate at all)
denarium foeda sordida creationes malum Genius mala opera Flagitia atque horrenda insidiis Torquemada scriptor HORA SOMNI Fabulae Flavi Gazette cerritulus Errationes Strange Renuntiationes metuendus Rationes Grim nugas atrocitate Exhibition HORRENDUS fabulas metuendaque malum cerritulus ginationes
penny Dreadful Filthy Creations Evil Genius Evil works Infamies and Appalling Plots Torquemada's Bedtime Tales The Yellow Gazette Weird Wanderings Strange Reports Dreadful Accounts Grim Scribblings Atrocity Exhibition Appaling tales dreaded evil weird imaginings
Malum mortuus is good - the evil dead sexualem fabulas - sexy stories is also good on the grounds that sex sells everything - although ithas nothing to do with the board or its contents.

Atrocitate Spectaculum is good although I'd need to check it and arcanus fabulas (mysterious tales) or Arcanus on its own sounds cool. .

sordida creationes malum Genius Flagitia atque horrenda insidiis HORRENDUS fabulas Malum mortuus is good - the evil dead I quite like all of these, and Demonik would probably appreciate "Flagitia atque horrenda insidiis". sexualem fabulas - sexy stories is also good on the grounds that sex sells everything - although ithas nothing to do with the board or its contents. How can you say that, with Penni dropping in!

How about Uneasy Times or a sort of combo - Uneasy Times and Filthy Creations? Uneasy Illusions and Filthy Creations Anecdotes of Unease Fabrications, Fables, Filthy Creations and Tales of Unease Hmmmm.....
