Often-seen but still one of my favourites. Based on Abraham Merritt's novel Burn Witch, Burn, the screenplay was by Guy Endore (The Werewolf of Paris), Erich von Stroheim and Garrett Ford. Starring Lionel Barrymore as Lavond, and Maureen O'Sullivan (sexiest Jane ever to Johnny Weissemuller's Tarzan of the Apes and mother of Vivian Leigh) as Lorraine. Leonard Smith's cinematography combines with Cedric Gibbons art direction to excellent effect and the scene with the miniature apache dancer (Grace Ford) bent on murder is great - apart from the lack of shadows from the miniaturized characters and animals, which someone else had to point out to me! Direction of course was by Tod (Dracula, Freaks) Browning. The Devil Doll at IMDB Grace Ford casting a shadow
