All these small press covers make me much regret my "years in the wilderness" (Good grief, I'll have to find a less Messianic term for "On the dole" . But it's great to see them here now.

I've recently joined the BFS, and Dark Horizons is an excellent magazine and its cover art still brilliant. My reason for singling out this Mark Dunn cover is that I thought it looked so refreshing with its pre-Photoshop glory.

Earlier, Redbrain had a story in 'Tales After Dark' #1 and I thought if he can get a story published so can I! Up till then I thought you had to be a rather special person to get published!

I'm struggling to come up with a pair that you've not already mentioned!

The "legendary" sixth issue of Poison Coffin: note free sweeties taped to cover. Fire, their founder and figurehead was still around (I'm pretty sure the cover illo is one of hers) but there'd been a bust-up in the camp and this issue was compiled by an all-new version of the 'Coffin: Kevin, Suzy, Igor and Severed Hand. Interviews with goth bands and vampire scene "personalities" you're lucky if you avoided.

Ripperologist #30, (August 2000)

Paul Begg edits the long-running Ripperologist for the Cloak & Dagger Club whose membership include several eminent 'Ripper' authors, sundry Casebook.org types and Jeremy-bloody-Beadle. I despise the Ripper industry but the magazine is very impressive.

If I had any more of these I'd have given Weird Tales Collector its own thread. Robert Weinberg is a class act and this is a fantastic magazine featuring a complete index to the short-lived but influential Strange Stories (1939-41). Mary E. Counselman speaks fondly of her years with Weird Tales and her enduring friendships with Seabury Quinn, Derleth, Harold Lawlor and mentor Farnsworth-Wright, while The Case Of The Moonlighting Physicians reveals the unlikely source for Virgil Finlay's famous portraits of Jules de Grandin and Dr. Trowbridge - a laxative ad!

Knight, Death & Devil (Gargoyles Press, April - May, 1999)

In which the spiky heroines of the dear, departed Gothic Society nonchalantly shrugged off their shrouds and emerged from the vault clutching a deceptively dainty little item which recalled the celebrated Udolpho despite bearing no surface resemblance to it whatsoever! So sad that it only survived the one issue.

After the amusing and typically self-effacing open letter, we get down to the nitty gritty. The Fire By Night, a taster for Jennie Gray's (then) forthcoming non-fiction outing of the same title, details the fallout from a tragic incident which saw 150 Englishmen perish on returning from a bombing raid on Berlin. As Jennie delved deeper into her research she unintentionally debunked the family legends surrounding a close relatives fortuitous survival. Jan Bondeson's curious and terrible history of The Feejee Mermaid and, in particular, Jennie's De Quincy & Murder - specifically his reportage on 1811's notorious Ratcliffe Highway slaughter spree - are not a million miles removed from the delightfully grisly, blackly comic fare Udolpho excelled in. Those with an interest in the latter case will be aware of the legend that the alleged murderer, John Williams, is buried at the crossroads of Cable Street and what is now Canon Street Road. Well, there's no 'legend' about it according to the proprietor of the gloriously gloomy Willow Music Hall who once informed me that he'd discovered the fellow's staked corpse beneath boards during renovation work at the Crown & Dolphin public house!

Mind you, he was probably talking bollocks.

Finally, we have those behind Misericordia explain themselves and their medieval music, as featured on the Robins M'aime CD.

Cthulhu Cultus #9 (1998)
Amazingly, I have 7 issues (1997 – 1999) and they all have exactly the same uncredited cover design (except for the issue number and the colour card it’s printed on)!! And what is the design supposed to represent? (NB: The faint blobs around the edge are not on the cover itself).
Packed with fiction. Writers in this issue are Burnham (Crispin Burnham?), R.S.Cartwright, Robert Bee, James Ambuehl, Tani Jantsang, Philip Obed Marsh and others.

Exceptionally, a single entry into the Ark, this time, to prevent further fighting (Dem and Caroline)!
SIVULLINEN came from Finland in the mid-Nineties (in English) with many many quite stunning but artfully-drawn horror images inside, stories etc.
