My deathless classic 'School:The Seventh Silence' - recently reviewed by a certain dungeon master here - can now be read it online at www.smashwords.com for a mere $5. This might be a market for others

I'm looking into Smashwords, but it seems a bit complicated.

I'm looking into Smashwords, but it seems a bit complicated. I can never get my head round these things but you might. There's a section here which is limited to members where you can put your work up and the rest of us will have a look at it but the wider public can't see it. A few of us are published authors so we have been through what you're going through now. We know its a sickening heartless business with few success stories but we have a go. In my own case I had years of rejection slips and might have beens before getting a few breakthroughs. You've just got to keep at it for its own sake.

Trying to decide which thread, and who, to post to... there's a slight cross-over here, which is always nice.
I'd agree with Craig about just keeping at writing until something happens, and obviously a forum like this one can help where stories can be posted in the 'private' section for constructive criticism.
Self-publishing doesn't have to cost anything. Usually the question of money only arises when you want a hard-copy book. Promoting a book is where the hard work really starts. Incredibly time-consuming, aside from anything else. The internet's awash with self-published books which might be good or bad; and to agree with Craig's other point, your chances of being read will be greater if you have a story in an anthology with other, hopefully better-known authors.
If you decide to self-publish by posting stories to a blog, that's one way of getting feedback. Bear in mind though that some anthology editors won't accept stories that have been on public display. I think I've found some real gems on blogs, and used them in FC. But I think I'm in the minority. Most won't consider them.

The main reason why I won't post my story(stories) to a blog is because I'm afraid of someone stealing my work.
I got rejected again this morning, but I am working on other stories. I'm not getting anywhere with the current one.
I'm currently looking into smashwords and createspace, but I might like to publish something for the FC magazine, but I don't know the guidelines.

Briefly - short is good, Don't worry about formatting. Try one you've had rejected and we might be able to see what's up with it (If anything) Remember rejection might mean anything. It's like a guy selling door to door. You might have some good stuff but the customer just doesn't need it, or is busy, doesn't like the colour - anything really. Remember also its a cruel business. Loads of writers on here and the vault have had stories rejected, loads have had them accepted only to see small magazines fold or have to wait years before a thing is published. Day of the Jackal, a million seller, was rejected 66 times I think. Be patient - keep writing for the fun of it.

So should I just post my story in the Filthy Creations thread? Are stories still published in the magazine? Are there any specific rules as to getting my story in the magazine?
Just so you know, I mostly write crime and some horror. My writing is very simple, but I'm a bit weak with descriptions.
Rejected 66 times?!
Is it true that your story/book has to be 24 pages long at smashwords?
It's a bit confusing to actually create a book itself!
Why is it that editors will refuse to accept your story if it's published elsewhere? Is it in case of people stealing the story?

Why is it that editors will refuse to accept your story if it's published elsewhere? Is it in case of people stealing the story? Just post it in the private members filthy C thread - the one with the red message running under it. Only members will see it The only rule with FC is that Cal likes the story. FC is published very infrequently which means maybe one or two a year. Its not a professional magazine and puts no restrictions on what you do with your story. I heard that somewhere about Day of the Jackal but checked and it was rejected at least by 4 major publishers. Not sure where I read it. But read this to help understand how many things get rejected www.marileebrothers.com/book-rejections.htmlNot sure about smash words Most editors take first rights on a story. My own experience is that editors take first rights which means they publish it once as a first and then you are free after its publication to take it elsewhere. They simply want to be the first to publish it. That's the main issue - after published you can send it anywhere usually.

When was the last FC magazine published?
Hopefully Cal will see the story and like it!

As it turns out, the self publishing sites need bank information. I also still have to figure out proper book formatting.
