hey, des! i'm still attempting to piece together some notes on a variety of publications, and i've decided upon something approaching a strategy. If i've only a single issue of whichever mag, it goes here, but if i've a run of them, or they're of especial interest (to me, if nobody else) they get a separate thread. is that ok by you?

I don't like to say it, and i'm not even sure why, but this celebration of one of the earliest UK horror film 'zines doesn't work for me at all - could be that it's about two killer articles short of the real deal or maybe it just hasn't worn well. but that cover - and the artwork on the backside which would doubtless cause photobucket to throw a fit - has seen it remain in my collection while several other magazines went walkabout.

here's the undated Gibbering Madness debut.

i remember the day this arrived very well as the envelope weighed about 3 tons due to all thee flyer's editor Evan had included. i immediately sent off for the Sheffield Hunt Sab's punk compilation cassette Hunt Scum Your Time Has Come which featured a tasty cover of hanging on the telephone by doom (i think). Evan's editorial set the tone:

The reasons I've decided to start this magazine are:

1) I think the prices of books and magazines are absolutely horrendous.
2) It's the sort of magazine I would buy.
3) I want it to be a platform for anyone who wants to see their work in print. whether it's short stories, poems, articles/ comments/ letters on anything you like to do with horror/ weird art, fiction, films or things. Basically, you send it to me and I'll print it. The magazine is accessible to everyone and anyone - as you will see in this issue, there are things by people of all ages.

from that manifesto, i'm sure you'll all realise why Gibbering Madness was an easy magazine to love.
